New details emerge as the acquisition of Bellator MMA by the PFL has been made official ahead of their championship event this Friday.

The PFL has officially acquired Bellator and it means a new day has officially arrived in the MMA landscape.

Per a press release, Bellator will continue as a “reimagined brand” in 2024 with “all Bellator fighters becoming available to compete in PFL franchises.” Β Exactly how this is expected to be divided is still uncertain but it does confirm that the contracts of all Bellator fighters will indeed go under the umbrella of the PFL, thus adding a significant amount of elite talent to their already respectable roster.

The Todd Atkins MMA Show first reported news of a potential sale of Bellator to the PFL earlier this year. In late October, journalist Al Zullino reported that the sale had been finalized.

PFL CEO Donn Davis announced that the Bellator brand would operate primarily outside of the US as “Bellator International Champions Series” which hints that the brand would continue their strong presence in Europe where fan reception to events has been astronomical.

Davis also announced that the plan was to host a super-event next year that would feature the Bellator champions against the PFL champions, the latter of which will be determined at their event this Friday which concludes the 2023 season.

As of this writing, it has not been established exactly which fighters will continue to anchor the Bellator brand and which will be part of the PFL vs Bellator event. Β It should be noted, however, that the PFL does not currently have divisions for several of the weight classes that Bellator does such as men’s bantamweight, men’s middleweight, and women’s flyweight. Β Another point to address is that it is completely possible that just because the fighters are in a division that the PFL houses it does not mean that they will fight in the PFL immediately.

Exactly where Bellator goes with their lightweight Grand Prix is unclear and has not yet been addressed. Β On Friday, Alexandr Shabliy defeated Patricky “Pitbull” Freire to reach the finals of the tournament. Β A week earlier, champion Β Usman Nurmagomedov had his victory over Brent Primus overturned to a No Contest after testing positive for a banned substance. Β What the promotion’s plan, if there was one at all with the impending merger, for the tournament going forward was not made official. Β Whether there is a tournament final at all as part of the Bellator International Series has not been announced.

PFL CEO Donn Davis is scheduled to make a media appearance later today to discuss the merger.

With a perfect record of 27-0, welterweight champ Yaroslav Amosov was the man to close out Bellator 301 against Jason Jackson β€” the final Bellator event of 2023, and with the promotion’s future up in the air, perhaps the final event of the promotion as we know it.

Amosov had a game challenger in Jackson at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois on Friday night, with plenty of chances presenting themselves for both men early. Jackson spent much of the round walking the champ down, keeping him circling on the outside. Despite a couple of clinches, the bout played out on the feet in the opening round, with Jackson fighting off a couple of takedown attempts.

Early in the second, Jason Jackson shrugged off another takedown attempt, fired a knee, and had to deal with a kick in response. 90 seconds in, the champ looked for a high-crotch single leg takedown attempt only for Jackson to easily break free. Each and every takedown stuffed was no doubt a shot in the arm of confidence for challenger Jackson; near the midway mark, Jackson cracked the Ukrainian standout with a perfectly placed uppercut.

The back half of the second round saw another uppercut land for Jackson, as did at least one sharp calf kick. Amosov finally managed to clamp on a body lock, but try as he might, he could not get Jason Jackson to the mat. Amosov finished the round with a high kick, but the second belonged to Jackson.

In the opening minute of the third, Jackson again cracked Yaroslav Amosov with a nasty uppercut. If nothing else the champ had a chin, but those were going to add up regardless. Moments later, Jackson dropped Amosov with a right hand! That put him to a knee, an uppercut sent him the rest of the way to the mat! The champ dove in on a leg, but Jackson took the opportunity to put the fight away with a few extra strikes! A huge upset win by Jason Jackson, who becomes the first man to defeat Yaroslav Amosov, claiming the Bellator MMA welterweight championship in the process!

Official Result: Jason Jackson def. Yaroslav Amosov by KO, Round 3, 2:08

Sergio Pettis and Patchy Mix looked to prove who the best bantamweight in Bellator MMA, and perhaps even the world, was at Bellator 301 on Friday night.

The pair’s title unification bout served as the evening’s co-main event, but given the run both men had been on, it was arguably the most prestigious fight on the card.

Roughly 90 seconds in, Mix hoisted Pettis up over his shoulder, though the slam takedown that was expected to follow was less slam and more laying Pettis on his back. Still, on top was just were Patchy Mix, with an embarrassment of riches in the submission department, wanted to be.

Working from bottom, on the other hand, was where Sergio Pettis did not want to be. Pettis got his butterfly guard in place, looking to lift Mix off him to no avail. Instead, Mix moved to side control, and throughout the round, showed what was widely believed ahead of the bout: in the grappling department, he almost certainly had the edge.

Round two saw the pair go the ground roughly a minute in, with Mix locking up a body triangle in quick succession. Before long, Patchy Mix had an arm under the neck, and it was soon in tight like a vice! While Pettis refused to tap, the ref intervened just as he started going out, checking the now-former champ’s arm (Pettis may have actually signaled his submission to the ref). Either way, no complaint about the stoppage from Sergio Pettis, who was clearly either out, or well on his way.

As for Mix, a stunningly one-sided performance to ascend to the top of the bantamweight mountain. Patchy declared himself the best bantamweight on the planet following the win, saying he would have defeated King Kong if necessary.

Official Result: Patchy Mix def. Sergio Pettis by submission (rear-naked choke), Round 2, 1:51

Lightweight standouts A.J. McKee and Sidney Outlaw faced off on the Bellator 301 main card on Friday night β€” a battle of two fighters who would have been in the Lightweight Grand Prix, had fate not had other plans for them.

Outlaw was pulled from the tournament shortly after his quarterfinal fight had been announced, having failed a drug test. As for McKee, the former featherweight champ saw injury pull him from a fight with Patricky Pitbull.

The lightweight pair got right to work on Friday, with Outlaw landing an early takedown, which McKee defended with a guillotine. When the guillotine wasn’t there, however, McKee spent a good stretch of time on his back, seconds ticking away without Outlaw getting much damage in, or really improving position much, though he did try.

McKee would make it to the fence basically, looking to wall-walk up to no avail as Outlaw turned him away from the cage. McKee then fired elbows off his back, while Outlaw worked the body.

By virtue of spending the entire round on top, Outlaw no doubt won the round. But he did very little damage despite sitting in a dominant position throughout almost the entirety of the round.

Round two opened with Outlaw catching an A.J. kick, which nearly had him get the fight down. Instead, McKee managed to fight off the attempt with elbows, getting to his feet and cutting Outlaw with at least one of those blows. Outlaw, bloodied, would get the fight down, only to eat more McKee elbows, who was firing them off his back again.

Again, Sidney Outlaw would ride out the round on top. But there would be a better argument for A.J. McKee winning round two, given the damage he had done early on, and off his back.

A.J. opened round three with a 1-2, and this time it was McKee landing a takedown along the fence. Outlaw would later reverse the position, pulling McKee’s legs out from under him and getting him flat on his back. With roughly two minutes to go, McKee began elbowing the body off his back, while Outlaw looked to pass guard. He couldn’t, and for a third straight round A.J. McKee appeared to have the striking advantage despite being on his back. How the judges would see things was another matter, given Sidney Outlaw had dominated in the grappling department.

In something of a surprise result, all three judges scored all three rounds for A.J. McKee despite “The Mercenary” working off his back almost the entire fight. Not exactly a controversial result, given the damage A.J. inflicted β€” but still a rarity given the reluctance of judges to score rounds for fighters on bottom.

Official Result: A.J. McKee def. Sidney Outlaw by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Whatever happens with Bellator MMA moving forward, the resurgence of the grand prix/tournament format, now used by the PFL and occasionally ONE Championship, in large part can be credited to Scott Coker’s reign atop the company.

While the Bjorn Rebney area was tournament-based, the latter Bellator grand prix tournaments felt just a little more special.

At Bellator 301, the second semi-final of the lightweight grand prix played out, with Patricky Pitbull and Alexander Shabliy looking to punch their ticket to a title shot. Against who would be a question, with champ/finalist Usman Nurmagomedov failing a drug test. When and where was another concern, with Bellator on the auction block.

Still, the show must go on. And it did with the five-round lightweight affair kicking off the Bellator 301 main card on Friday in Chicago. A slow feeling out process played out through the first minute and a half, much to the dismay of the crowd at the Wintrust Arena. The action was then paused when Pitbull suffered an eye poke, or more of a face wash.

With Pitbull ready to go, the action got back underway; Shabliy worked his kicks, but Pitbull made sure to answer back with his hands. And he did so repeatedly, despite being bloodied by Shabliy by the end of the round.

Shabliy continued to work his kicks in round two, with both fighters loading up at times. Pitbull had to be careful not to put himself out of position; he also found himself stalked along the fence, Shabliy cutting off the cage and attacking with short combos and single strikes. In the final 30 seconds, Shabliy hit his target, sending Patricky Pitbull to his backside with a 1-2!

Round three saw Shabliy target the body, while Pitbull, likely trailing on the scorecards, fired a calf kick. Again, Alexander Shabliy was walking the Brazilian ex-champ down, but towards the midway mark, Pitbull came forward firing! Shabliy was forced to retreat, but then planted and fired a right hand, ending the onslaught as Pitbull eased off the attack.

Heading into round four, it appeared Pitbull had found some more gas in the tank, taking the fight to Shabliy. But as the round progressed, Shabliy took over, and soon it was Patricky Pitbull on his heels, covering up and being tagged multiple times by Shabliy! Blow after blow hitting its target, Pitbull was soon looking like ground beef. The fourth round was a bad one for the elder Pitbull brother, and he was looking at needing a finish heading into round five.

That finish wouldn’t come. Instead, it was Alexander Shabliy again putting in a strong effort in round five. He walked Pitbull down, picked him apart, and by the end of the frame, fired a spinning kick that hit the mark and had it not been partially blocked might have finished the fight.

The scorecards produced no surprises, with all three judges scoring all five rounds for Alexander Shabliy. He now advances to the lightweight grand prix finale, though when or where that fight might take place, and against who, remains to be seen.

Official Result: Alexander Shabliy def. Patricky Pitbull by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)

With a cloud of uncertainly hovering over the promotion, Bellator MMA returned to Chicago, IL on Friday night for Bellator 301 β€” with two title fights and the second bout of its ongoing lightweight grand prix on the card.

A big night even with the questions about the promotion’s future, especially given the winner of Patricky Pitbull and Alexander Shabliy would in theory be moving on to the lightweight grand prix final to face… well, possibly Brent Primus, given rumors he was back in the tournament following Usman Nurmagomedov’s positive drug test.

Headlining Bellator 301 was undefeated welterweight Yaroslav Amosov, taking on top contender Jason Jackson. Amosov entered the fight 27-0, with almost certainly the best record among active fighters regardless of promotion.

Arguably the best two bantamweights on the planet, meanwhile, faced off in a title unification bout when interim champ Patchy Mix took on Sergio Pettis, who was coming in off a defense of his title against Patricio Pitbull.

Where to Watch Bellator 301

Bellator 301 takes place at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, IL on Friday, November 17, 2023, airing live on Showtime in the U.S. (prelims via the Bellator MMA Youtube channel). Capping off the night at Bellator 300, a milestone event for the long-running MMA promotion, was a lightweight grand prix semifinal and title fight.

Usman Nurmagomedov, the undefeated cousin and heir apparent at least in terms of the family name to Khabib Nurmagomedov (spiritually, UFC champ Islam Makhachev would be in the mix too, of course) looked to defend his title and move on in the tournament against ex-champ Brent Primus.

Nurmagomedov was a heavy favorite coming into the fight.

The champ doubled up on some leg kicks early on, while Primus looked to stay in his face. Nurmagomedov switched stances, while Primus charged in, initiating a clinch until a knee landed for the champ. Nurmagomedov then fired a nasty-looking spinning back kick that came real close to connecting. They clinched up along the fence; Nurmagomedov connected with an elbow off the break. Primus did connect with a low kick, but Nurmagomedov fired one of his own back.

With two minutes to go, Primus fired a spinning back fist that was at least partially blocked. Having showed off his arsenal on the feet a little, Nurmagomedov then landed his first takedown, with apparent ease. They’d close out the round there.

Round two saw Primus close the distance, leading to a clinch. That didn’t last long, and Nurmagomedov continued to have the upper hand on the feet. Distance management with his wide array of kicks was key for the lightweight champ, leaving Primus stuck outside more often than not. Primus would land the occasional strike, but couldn’t put anything together.

The ex-champ would change levels for a takedown attempt with about 90 seconds remaining in the second round, to no avail. Primus would try a spinning kick of his own up high, but the wheel kick hit air, and appeared in slow motion in comparison to Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov was easily up two rounds heading into the third; Primus managed to land to the body, but again, the champ’s kicks were the more effective of the pair. Nurmagomedov began leading with elbows, showing off his creativity, and when he connected to the midsection with a kick, Primus backpedaled. Nurmagomedov showed effective defense, and landed flush on the chin later in the third round. While the champ managed to put combinations together, Primus appeared to be stuck in first gear still.

Entering the championship rounds, Nurmagomedov was almost certainly holding a clean sweep of the scorecards. For Primus to win, he’d need to find a finish, or somehow at least pull off a 10-8. Two of them, unless he was hunting for a draw. Even securing one against the near-perfect Nurmagomedov seemed unlikely. Early in the round, Primus shot in on a takedown, but that backfired. The champ reversed position, but Primus used the fence to stay up β€” caught red handed by the ref, the pair were restarted, and Nurmagomedov, getting the position back, finished a takedown.

That gave Usman Nurmagomedov lots of time to get to work on top. Primus wound up bloodied just a little. They’d head to round five, which felt almost perfunctory. Save for a hail Mary from Brent Primus, the winner of the fight was in little bout. Nurmagomedov didn’t shy away from engaging, but he did tie Primus up against the cage just over two minutes in, eating more time off the clock. Time that Primus was quickly running out of.

Primus pawed at his nose, his face bloodied again after being opened up in the fourth. Two minutes to go, and the champ dumped Primus on his back, landing a takedown. He’d work the challenger over a little before the final bell β€” the end result never in question.

With the win, Usman Nurmagomedov improves to 18-0, retains his lightweight title, and advances to the final of the lightweight grand prix. He’ll face the winner of next months Alexander Shabliy vs. Patricky Pitbull with a million dollars on the line.

Official Result: Usman Nurmagomedov def. Brent Primus by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)

Two of the most tenured veterans in women’s MMA faced off in the co-main event of Bellator 300 from San Diego, California as Cris Cyborg successfully defended her featherweight title against ‘Alpha’ Cat Zingano, winning by TKO in the first round.

Zingano was trying to become only the third person to beat Cyborg in MMA as she brought a four-fight unbeaten streak in Bellator into the fight. Cris also came in undefeated in Bellator at 5-0, with five championship bout victories to her name since signing with the promotion in 2020.

Zingano came out southpaw and shot a takedown on an orthodox Cyborg, who hit the mat initially but instantly scrambled back up and checked Cat’s chin. Cat tried to clinch up a few more times but each time Cyborg broke free while throwing big hooks. One takedown attempt two minutes in saw Zingano with her head on the mat, allowing Cyborg to slam in ground and pound. It looked potentially fight-ending for a moment but Cat scrambled to her feet.

Cyborg had several more big punches land to the chin of the challenger in the first round; Zingano was almost completely unable to touch her. With just over a minute left in the round Cat tried another poorly advised takedown and ended up on the bottom with Cyborg postured up in side control. The champion rained down hammerfists and it was only a few seconds before the referee had seen enough.

After the fight, Cris tried to go over to Zingano to make nice but Cat appeared to not be having it, responding bitterly, though her exact words were not audible on the broadcast. Cyborg then went to get her belt wrapped around her waist for a sixth time in a row.

In her post-fight interview, Cris expressed her desire to fight Leah McCourt, who had beaten Sara McMann earlier in the night by TKO. Cyborg also said she wants to fight in Japan before she retires, which must be coming soon at age 38. Regardless, fans must appreciate this MMA legend while she is still around.

Official Result:Β Cris Cyborg def. Cat Zingano by TKO (ground and pound) Round 1, 4:01

On a historic night for Bellator MMA, the promotion’s inaugural women’s flyweight champion and one of its biggest stars Ilima-Lei Macfarlane put on a gritty showing but fell (quite literally) after throwing down with flyweight champ Liz Carmouche.

The fight kicked off the Bellator 300 main card on Saturday at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, CA.

Macfarlane reigned as 125 pound queen from 2017 to 2019 and became the reason for Bellator to head to Hawaii each and every year. “The Iliminator,” actually good friends with Carmouche, became close with the ex-UFC talent while the two trained at 10th Planet in San Diego, giving both fighters ties to the city.

Macfarlane missing weight on Friday put a bit of a damper on the fight; that unfortunate occurrence has dogged her in two of her last three bouts. It left only Carmouche eligible to leave San Diego with gold, but whether it would play a role in the fight was another matter. It certainly didn’t seem to.

A lot of feeling out, a lot of movement, and little landing of note underscored the first two minutes of Carmouche vs. Macfarlane. When Ilima-Lei did come in, Carmouche would counter, leading to something of a chess match. With roughly two minutes to go, Macfarlane finally scored a couple of connections, firing overhand shots then slipping Carmouche’s counters, for the most part.

Towards the end of the round, the ref encouraged the pair to fight, and Macfarlane again managed to connect, though little damage was done by either fighter through the first five minutes. The ref admonished the pair again before round two even started: “give the judges something to score,” he suggested.

Through the first two minutes of the second frame, it was Macfarlane again firing overhands. Carmouche fired her left, added a kick, and Macfarlane circled. Arguably perhaps a little too much respect was being shown between the two; the end result was more of a sparring match. Macfarlane did move to catch a kick and fire an overhand, and Carmouche connected with a right hand with just under two minutes to go in the round, care of a clinch.

With just over a minute left in the second round, Macfarlane had a stumble, and seemed to take a stutter-step β€” hopefully not an issue with the knee that had bothered her in recent years. She continued on undeterred, while Carmouche walked her down, the Hawaiian circling on the outside.

Early in round three, Macfarlane hit her back, apparently suffering a leg issue off an early Carmouche kick. She dropped to her back again when Carmouche caught a kick, but was quickly back up. Another exchange, another stumble, without Carmouche even landing a kick. Macfarlane then tried to punch her way in, but couldn’t complete the entry. Carmouche chopped at Macfarlane’s lead leg a moment later in response. As the round wore on, more low kicks connected, and Macfarlane’s movement was increasingly hampered.

She did, however, pursue a takedown at the end of the round, but ran out of time.

Macfarlane came out hot in round four, lame leg or not. She continually punched her way in, looking for an entry to secure a takedown. No such luck, and when Carmouche kicked her leg, Macfarlane fell to her back yet again. Carmouche did not attempt to get on top, and Macfarlane was allowed to make a sloppy takedown attempt from the outside that Carmouche skipped away from.

By the midway mark of the round, Ilima-Lei Macfarlane was essentially hopping on one leg. Credit to her grit and heart and all those intangibles for keeping her in there, but a wounded duck generally has little chance in a fight.

That proved true just 17 seconds into the fifth and final round. In a hard to watch sequence, a Carmouche leg kick buckled Ilima-Lei Macfarlane’s leg. She went down screaming, clutching her knee, and the ref instantly waved it off.

While there had been some speculation about Macfarlane potentially retiring at Bellator 300, she left the cage no doubt in search of medical treatment immediately after the result was read. As for Carmouche, she called for a second fight with Kana Watanabe, saying the Japanese fighter had “earned” the chance to fight her again β€” with Carmouche wanting to host the fight in Japan.

Official Result: Liz Carmouche (c) def. Ilima-Lei Macfarlane by TKO (leg kick), Round 5, 0:17

Bellator 300 arrived on Saturday at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, CA, celebrating a significant milestone for a promotion that has been the #2 name in mixed martial arts for the better part of a decade.

Established in 2008, from its roots as a tournament-based company where title shots were earned under founder Bjorn Rebney, to its modern-day incarnation as a hybrid model with standalone fights mixed with the occasional grand prix under current CEO Scott Coker, Bellator has managed to put on some massive fights over the years.

Among them, the classics between Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler (the biggest shame is the trilogy was never completed), and another pair of huge fights featuring A.J. McKee and Patricio Pitbull throwing down for the promotion’s featherweight title. Cris Cyborg’s featherweight reign, the late-career resurgence of Fedor Emelianenko (who certainly had his struggles in the promotion), Ilima-Lei Macfarlane helping to make trips to Hawaii an annual occurrence β€” there are numerous highlights from Bellator’s run to date, and while the promotion’s future remains uncertain, it had plenty to offer at Bellator 300.

In the main event of Saturday’s megacard, Usman Nurmagomedov put his lightweight title on the line against Brent Primus, in the first lightweight grand prix semifinal (the next arrives in November, with Patricky Pitbull facing Alexander Shabliy). Two more title fights round out the Bellator 300 main card, as Cris Cyborg faces Cat Zingano in a long-awaited match-up, and Liz Carmouche faces friend Ilima-Lei Macfarlane. The latter, however, will not be eligible to win gold after missing weight on Friday.

Bellator 300 airs live on Showtime in the U.S. following online prelims; the card is available via streaming PPV in Canada. Prelims kick off at 6:30PM ET, with the main card getting underway at 10PM. Full results from the event can be found below.
