The UFC returned to the confines of the Apex this past weekend for UFC Vegas 82, as Brendan Allen tied the record for the longest active submission streak in UFC history.

Let’s take a look at what could be next for Allen, along with the other standout winners on the night.

Brendan Allen

“All In” Allen’s last loss was back in 2021, and you’d have to go back six fights to get there. The 27-year-old has put on an incredibly impressive streak of performances, scoring a rear-naked-choke win in four of his last four fights, tying the longest active submission record.

There is no doubt that since that loss to Chris Curtis two years ago, the Louisiana product has improved leaps and bounds, and now finds himself ranked in the top 10 at 185lbs, above the aforementioned “Action Man”.

Allen is now in a position where he is knocking on the door of the top five, in a division that has seemingly been screaming out for new title contenders for the past few years. The submission artist has already shared the cage with the current champion, Sean Strickland, in which he was finished, but that was going back to 2020. Strickland will defend his title against Dricus Du Plessis, who you could say would be a favourable matchup for Allen and his grappling upside.

With the rest of the top five already being booked into fights, there is one name that stands out more than most for me, and that is, Marvin Vettori.

The Italian is seemingly struggling to find a fight and this one makes perfect sense. He is coming off a loss to Jared Cannonier and needs to defend his ranking.

Allen’s Next Fight: Marvin Vettori

Michael Morales

When thinking of the most impressive prospects in the UFC, Michael Morales must be a name that comes very close to the top of the list.

The 24-year-old now boasts a professional record of 16-0, with four of those coming under the UFC banner. Jake Matthews proved to be his toughest outing thus far, but the Ecuadorian showed a different side to his style, and proved to be the better fighter over a technical three rounds.

That is now back-to-back wins over fighters with 15 or more UFC fights, providing the youngster with integral experience.

Despite being just 24-years-old, it seems as though Morales is ready for the next step in his UFC tenure. There are several fighters inside the top 15 who make sense for him moving forward.

Of course, when talking about welterweight prospects who are nearing the rankings, Neil Magny’s ears must run hot. “The Haitian Sensation” is already booked to fight Canadian prospect, Mike Malott though.

The occupant of rank 15 though, is someone Morales has been slated to fight previously but due to injury, he had to withdraw from the scheduled bout. Rinat Fakhretdinov could make a lot of sense again now, being as though he sits upon a ranking that Michael Morales could be coming for.

Morales’ Next Fight: Rinat Fakhretdinov

Chase Hooper

“The Dream” Chase Hooper marked his second lightweight outing with another extremely impressive performance. In this one, he had to face some early adversity when he was rocked with some heavy Leavitt ground-and-pound. From there though, he was able to win the grappling exchanges, subsequently getting the first round sub.

Before the fight, Hooper told Cageside Press, that he wanted to enter the unofficial ‘best grappler in the lightweight division rankings’ and with the rear-naked-choke, he may have done exactly that.

With him looking increasingly more comfortable with each 155lb outing, the 24-year-old will likely want to take a little bit of time off as he and his wife expect a baby.

With that being Hooper’s 8th UFC fight despite only being 24-years-old, there is no reason to try and rush him up the rankings of the lightweight division.

Someone who I think could be a fun next matchup for Hooper, is Lando Vannata. Despite his recent skid, the losses have come to some of the higher echelon fighters in the division.

Hooper’s Next Fight: Lando Vannata

Payton Talbott

After a highly impressive performance on the Contender Series earlier this year, Talbott came into his UFC debut with a lot of eyes on him.

The 25-year-old didn’t disappoint as he put on another emphatic performance, submitting Nick Aguirre in the final round. It is going to very interesting to see Talbott’s UFC career unfold.

Selfishly I would love to see a fight between Payton Talbott and Da’Mon Blackshear, however that’s quite farfetched for Talbott’s second UFC outing. A fight that would be more realistic would be, Dan Argueta.

Talbott’s Next Fight: Dan Argueta

Amanda Ribas

The Brazilian striker bounced back from her loss to Maycee Barber, with a great third round KO over Luana Pinheiro, in her strawweight return.

Once again Ribas showed a full arsenal of striking, and began her final finishing sequence with a picture perfect spinning wheel kick, which wobbled and subsequently dropped Pinheiro.

With Ribas hoping for a resurgence at strawweight, there is female who is on her rise up the rankings, and sits just one spot behind Ribas. That is Loopy Godinez who has continued impressing. That is a fight I could see next.

Ribas’ Next Fight: Loopy Godinez

Myktybek Oralbai

Marking his UFC debut with a second round finish was, Myktybek Oralbai. The Kirghiz native had a slow round one against the powerful, Uros Medic, but was able to capitalise with his grappling advantage in round two.

There are plenty options for the 25-year-old, but one I’m keen on is, Ange Loosa.

Oralbai’s Next Fight: Ange Loosa

The latest Apex-based Fight Night card saw Scotland’s Paul Craig suffer his first loss as a middleweight, falling to former LFA champ Brendan Allen. What comes next for Craig and the losing side of the UFC Vegas 82 main card? Read on!

Paul Craig

Scottish submission savant Paul Craig got utterly stymied in his first main event opportunity, and his second middleweight fight in the UFC, when he ran into Brendan Allen. Craig still is ranked at 185-lbs and should fight another ranked middleweight with his 1-1 divisional record.

The only option ranked under him currently who is not booked is Anthony ‘Fluffy’ Hernandez. ‘Fluffy’ has a similar style to Brendan Allen in some ways; he can strikes but prefers to press forward, wrestle, and hunt a finish on the ground. Craig is more than willing to engage their due to his jiu-jitsu, but has been beaten there a few times now. To stay ranked he will need to prove he can grow as a fighter and overcome this hurdle.

Craig’s Next Fight: Anthony Hernandez

Jake Matthews

Matthews continued his recent streak of trading wins and losses when he lost by decision to undefeated prospect Michael Morales in UFC Vegas 82’s co-main event. The Australian has been a mainstay of the UFC welterweight division for a long time, building an impressive 12-7 record in the promotion. He has long put on exciting fights, making him a man consistently tapped for relatively big fights given his unranked status.

He will have to rebound from this loss, but the options are endless. Fighters like Max Griffin, Santiago Ponzinibbio, and Daniel Rodriguez have all lost two of their last three fights, just like Jake. All of these fighters could make for an exciting striking battle but also have well-rounded skills. Perhaps most sensible would be Max “Pain” Griffin, who also lost to Michael Morales in his last fight, putting him and Jake on a relatively even playing field in terms of their divisional position.

Matthews’ Next Fight: Max Griffin

Jordan Leavitt

Jordan ‘The Monkey King’ Leavitt chased a leg lock against submission specialist Chase Hooper, got his back taken, and got choked out to lose. He took it in good spirits as ever, made easier by his still-winning record in the UFC of 4-3. Leavitt could fight any number of athletes in the stacked lightweight waters.

Chilean fighter Ignacio Bahamondes has a similar record in the UFC of 3-2, but brings an entirely different style to the table with his electric kickboxing. That fight would be a true clash of styles and give one man back an upward trajectory in the division after both lost their last fight.

Leavitt’s Next Fight: Ignacio Bahamondes

Nick Aguirre

Aguirre had success early but ultimately lost to prospect Payton Talbott in his second of two UFC bouts. His back is against the wall now and he will need to win his next fight in order to keep his job with the promotion. He will be matched against a fellow inexperienced fighter again, many of whom just won contracts on the newest season of Dana White’s Contender Series.

Victor Hugo was meant to debut two weeks ago against Daniel Marcos but his weight miss caused the bout to be canceled. Marcos still needs to compete in his first UFC fight, and if he can get his weight in order then perhaps Aguirre would be a good opponent.

Aguirre’s Next Fight: Victor Hugo

Luana Pinheiro

Ninth-ranked strawweight Luana Pinheiro lost for the first time in the UFC to hard-nosed veteran Amanda Ribas. After comfortably winning the first round, Pinheiro lost all momentum as Ribas’ pace, pressure, and toughness wore her down until Amanda got the finish in the third. Pinheiro still has a future at strawweight, especially since the fight before this was a win over veteran contender Michelle Waterson-Gomez, but will probably need to dip her toes into the unranked waters before coming back to fighting ranked foes.

Two unranked strawweights on two-fight UFC winning streaks are Loma Lookboonmee and Viktoria Dudakova. Lookboonmee is a Muay Thai specialist who is developing a well-rounded skillset and got her first career submission in her last fight. Dudakova is undefeated at 8-0, two fights into her UFC contract. With under ten fights, perhaps it would be better to build Viktoria up slower and give Lookboonmee the opportunity to fight for a ranked spot against Pinheiro.

Pinheiro’s Next Fight: Loma Lookboonmee

Uroš Medić

Uroš Medić’s two-fight winning streak was snapped as he lost for the first time in his new division, welterweight, against short notice debutant Myktybek Orolbai Uulu. Medić old weakness to grappling got exposed as the Kygystani fighter took him down and submitted the Serb in the second round.

Medić’s fight before this one still proved he can be a force in the division as he beat the more experienced and strongly favored Matt Semelsberger in an all-out war. Uroš has shown to be all-action, just like fellow welterweight Li Jingliang, who would make a perfect opponent for his next fight coming off of his loss to Daniel Rodriguez. No matter what card it appears on, that fight would be a surefire ‘Fight of the Night’ shortlist member.

Medić’s Next Fight: Li Jingliang

It was a big night for individual performances at UFC Vegas 82 on Saturday, and with that in mind, the UFC’s head honchos have handed out four Performance bonuses.

No Fight of the Night was named at the Fight Night show, which got off to an early start on Saturday afternoon (or morning, if you were on the west coast). Four Performance of the Night awards, however, were issued, including one to main event middleweight Brendan Allen.

Earning his sixth straight victory to cement himself as a real contender at 185lbs, Allen locked up a rear-naked choke on Scotland’s Paul Craig just over 30 seconds into round number three. Craig was forced to tap, giving Allen five rear-naked choke submissions in his current six-fight win streak.

Additional Performance of the Night bonuses at UFC Vegas 82 went to Joanderson Brito, Amanda Ribas, and Jeka Saragih. Brazil’s Ribas mounted a comeback victory in her strawweight match-up with Luana Pinheiro, after being pieced up in the opening round. Fellow Brazilian Brito, meanwhile, called for a bonus after his ninja choke submission win over Jonathan “JSP” Pearce to close out the preliminary card.

Brito had some pointed criticism, complaining previous finishes had gone unrewarded.

As for Jeka Saragih, his UFC Vegas 82 knockout of favorite Lucas Alexander, who missed weight for their featherweight fight, was historic, as he became the first UFC fighter from Indonesia to earn a win in the organization.

All four bonus-winning fighters will pocket an extra $50,000 for their efforts, on top of their fight purse, outfitting pay, etc.

The UFC returned to its stronghold at the Apex in Las Vegas for UFC Vegas 82 on Saturday, with middleweights Brendan Allen and Paul Craig in the main event.

It’s somewhat strange to both write and read that sentence, given Craig was so well-known as a light heavyweight throughout his UFC run. But having made the move to middleweight, Craig had already been earning dividends, and landed in his first-ever main event for the UFC against Allen, a former LFA champ.

“All In” Allen isn’t one to talk trash or dazzle anyone outside the cage, but inside the octagon, his skill, especially on the ground, has proven sublime. Five straight wins at 185, and four of those by submission (all four rear-naked chokes) show exactly what Brendan Allen is about.

Of course, Paul Craig has been no slouch on the ground either over the years. Making for a very promising match-up atop UFC Vegas 82.

In the co-main event, meanwhile, Australian welterweight Jake Matthews took on undefeated Brazilian standout Michael Morales.

Following UFC Vegas 82 on Saturday, November 18, 2023, tune in for the post-fight press conference to stay on top of all the latest developments. A live stream of the affair is available in the embed above.

Contender Series winner Payton Talbott made his UFC debut on Saturday, facing off with Nick Aguirre in a bantamweight match-up nestled on the UFC Vegas 82 main card.

That might suggest they see a little star power in bantamweight Talbott, who certainly doesn’t lack in the personality department. Of course, it was what he could show in the cage that mattered.

He wound up showing plenty. Right away Aguirre shot in on the legs and got Talbott down pretty easily. Aguirre interlaced the legs and secured wrist control to get a better position on the mat. Talbott was working with his back against the cage but Aguirre was all over him. Aguirre was almost on the back but Talbott got back to his feet. With Aguirre still halfway on his back. Finally Aguirre ended up jumping on the back fully and got Talbott down. Tallbott was in a terrible position with Aguirre tight on his back. Back to his feet went Talbott but the round ended with Aguirre on his back.

Talbott was coming out first in round two with a right hand and a heavy kick to the body. Aguirre shot in for a takedown but was too far out and Talboot defended. Talbott was getting in his grove. Aguirre ended up pulling guard and letting Talbott on top. Talbott did good work there but wound up letting Aguirre back up. Aguirre timed a takedown entry very well and ended up getting the takedown. Like in round one, Talbott got back up but with Aguirre on his back. Aguirre was too high though and Talbott got top position. Aguirre was moving well off his back but Talbott did some damage right before the bell.

In the final round it was likely tied at one round a piece. Talbott was pressuring Aguirre with punches forcing Aguirre to shoot. Talbott defended and turned towards Aguirre getting into full mount. He unloaded with ground and pound and Aguirre gave up his back. It was the striker in Talbott that locked up the RNC and the grappler Aguirre tapped.

Official Result: Payton Talbott def. Nick Aguirre by submission (rear-naked choke), Round 2, 0:58

Top-fifteen Brazilian strawweights Luana Pinheiro and Amanda Ribas faced off at UFC Vegas 82 from the UFC Apex on Saturday night.

Ribas was once 4-0 in the UFC, but has traded losses and wins every fight since then to fall to 6-3. Though that is still a respectable record which has her ranked at both strawweight and flyweight, at thirty years old Ribas needs to stack a winning streak together starting now in order to get to a title fight. She could do that at either 115 or 125-lbs potentially, but in this fight she moved back down in weight after her recent loss to Maycee Barber at flyweight. On the other hand, Pinheiro sat where Ribas did in 2020, undefeated in the UFC with tons of momentum and the number nine next to her name. She had not lost since 2017 as a matter of fact, but Ribas took exception to that and walked out of the Apex with a win at the end of the night.

Both women started the fight swinging but especially Pinheiro, who landed on Ribas early and hurt her. Ribas retreated and the onslaught eventually stopped, giving her time to recover. Pinheiro still landed wild hooks every time that she let her hands go, as Amanda’s head was always on the center line. The pace slowed and Pinheiro picked her spots judiciously as she began to mix in leg kicks and avoiding the little offensive output that Ribas provided. Just past halfway through the round Ribas had a moment when she landed three good punches that stunned Luana momentarily, but Pinheiro recovered and got back to her gameplan. Her footwork and head movement was on point and Ribas could hardly land a glove on her most of the time. Ribas failed a takedown with one minute left but otherwise the same dynamic played out for the rest of the round.

The second round began with Ribas pressing forward again and Pinheiro evading, but this time Luana had far fewer moments where she dealt major damage to Ribas. Ribas added kicks to her attack and it served to deal damage when she could not reach with her hands. Pinheiro even attempted a takedown of her own with two minutes left as she began to slow down. She got in on a single leg but Ribas pushed her off and threw up a head kick that just missed as Pinheiro stood up. Amanda began to find success with her hands at last but then Pinheiro began to open up with hers again somewhat. Still, when the round ended it was certainly one that went to Amanda Ribas, who defended one last takedown right before the horn.

The final round in a presumably tied-up fight saw Pinheiro fight for momentum early, coming forward with punches more and throwing kicks of her own. The pace and volume of Ribas clearly still troubled her, but her defense allowed her to stay safe for the most part. Pinheiro failed another takedown but this time landed a knee on the break to score damage. One sequence saw Ribas land a backfist, eat a hook, and get thrown by Pinheiro. She bounced back to her feet but Pinheiro jumped on a front headlock, then try to take the back before settling in full guard. Luana pushed Ribas up against the fence but Amanda seemed more interested in striking off her back. However when she began to lock up an omoplata submission and Pinheiro was forced to withdraw, Ribas got back to her feet. There, she continued her relentless volume assault.

Pinheiro’s fatigue meant her defense had broken down completely and she ate every strike thrown at her, including a spinning wheel kick. Eventually she could not take it any longer and fell to her back, exhausted and badly hurt. The referee stopped the fight after only a few ground strikes to a semi-conscious Pinheiro.

Amanda Ribas showed at UFC Vegas 82 why she has won so many fights against good fighters, once again displaying true veteran grit and will to win. Despite being outclassed early on, she doubled down on her offense and just went forward harder until she broke her opponent. She will surely be in the running for a performance bonus at the end of the night, and can look ahead in the rankings to plan her assault on the throne now with a win back at strawweight.

Official Result: Amanda Ribas def. Luana Pinheiro by TKO (punches), Round 3, 3:53

Featherweight contender hopefuls Jonathan Pearce and Joanderson Brito capped off the preliminary card of UFC Vegas 82 on Saturday.

Pearce, aka “JSP,” started the night on a five-fight win streak, one of the hottest prospects in the weight class, while Brito came in on a three-fight run. JSP is known for a pressure and cardio-heavy wrestling game while Brito is known as a heavy-handed Brazilian who can grapple as a backup option. Many questions abounded. Would Brito’s cardio fail over fifteen minutes vs Pearce? Could Pearce stand with Brito? Would Brito be able to stay off his back?

JSP shot a takedown almost immediately but Brito defended with a guillotine choke and got an advantageous clinch position. Brito then surprised with a double leg takedown of his own, which he landed by lifting and slamming Pearce onto his back. JSP gave up his back to get up and Brito went for the back take. However, he fell off over the top and Pearce established side control. Brito regained full-guard. Pearce got high and attempted a front choke but Brito wrestled up and stood up halfway through the round.

As they got to striking Brito threw bombs but could not land anything. Pearce timed a takedown well but Brito’s takedown defense held up. Jonathan managed to maintain an outside position which let him control Joanderson in the clinch, but when he tried to pull Brito down, the Brazilian got on top. Brito had to avoid an armbar and the second he escaped that Pearce wrestled up and ended the round back on the feet.

Pearce landed an easy takedown to start the second round, perhaps a sign of Brito slowing down. Brito could not get him off as JSP controlled him from full guard. Brito began to try to punch off his back, at which point Pearce complained to the ref about strikes to the back of the head. Joanderson made a scoffing noise, causing Pearce to mock him, shouting, “Get up and do something, boy!”

Brito did begin to try to get up by first getting to a knee then standing back up fully. They grappled in the clinch for a moment before Brito threw his arms around JSP’s head and locked up a ninja choke, fast as lightning. Pearce dropped to his back and tapped a split second later.

The submission finish came out of almost nowhere in a round where Brito was being dominated. Jonathan Pearce was well ahead in the fight at the time of the finish but that is the offensive potency of Joanderson Brito. That is the reason Brito has won four UFC fights in a row by finish. Perhaps the Brazilian fighter can expect a top-fifteen opponent in his next fight now.

Through a translator, Brito expressed his dissatisfaction with not getting a bonus for some past finishes and demanded a bonus for this performance with his post-fight interview.

Official Result: Joanderson Brito def. Jonathan Pearce by Submission (Ninja Choke) Round 2, 3:54

Mick Parkin entered UFC Vegas 82 looking for his second win in the promotion, having earned a three-round decision victory in his debut this past July. Opposite the British heavyweight on Saturday was Caio Machado, a fellow Contender Series vet.

The pair tied up early in the opening round, with Parkin getting the fight down about a minute in. Machado had his back to the fence, and didn’t seem to feel a sense of urgency when it came to getting back up. Instead, he waited for an opening, scrambled, made it up— and was then taken right back down.

This time, Parkin stayed heavy on top in half-guard. Machado clasped his hands, but a moment later, he forced his way up, pretty much all power.

From there, the pair squared off along the fence, and most of the time remaining played out on the feet before they moved on to the second frame.

Machado found success with his left hand early in round two. Momentum, however, shifted back to Parkin as the round wore on, as the Brit was able to get on top in half guard again. Parkin spent some time working, getting in some damage until Machado pushed him off, then fired a jump knee back on the feet. Parkin tied up, utilizing some dirty boxing to bully Machado and push him to the fence. Parkkin went after a takedown, but instead Machado took the back in a scramble. Not for long, as Parkin reversed, and grabbed a crucifix, dropping elbows and working for a kimura until Machado escaped just ahead of the buzzer.

Round three was still very much anyone’s fight. Parkin was showing some damage by one eye. About a minute and a half in, the pair clashed heads, leading to a brief pause. Able to continue, they went back to work on the feet, Machado marching forward, firing hands and leading the attack. A lot of his shots were missing, to be fair, and both men were tired. Parkin closed the distance for a takedown, which Parkin pulled free of.  Machado mixed in a low kick, and Parkin found a bit of gas in the final minute, backing the Brazilian up. Machado fired another jump knee, missing, and Parkin took a labored swing before the horn.

Come the scorecards, all three judges scored the bout for Mick Parkin, keeping his undefeated record intact.

Official Result: Mick Parkin def. Caio Machado by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Women’s bantamweights Lucie Pudilova and Ailin Perez faced off early on Saturday’s UFC Vegas 82 card, with Perez looking for her second win in the company.

Pudilova was looking for the second win of her second stint, after winning her return then losing to Joselyne Edwards earlier this year. But things went south for the Czech fighter early, with Perez getting her down care of a throw. The Argentinian quickly moved to mount, and spent a good deal of time there while Pudilova tried to tie her up. What Pudilova could not do was shake Ailin Perez off of her. Instead, the round would end with Perez on top, and Pudilova showing some swelling around one eye.

Round two saw a little more action on the feet. But ahead of the midway mark of the frame, Perez again had Pudilova on her back. And once again she was quickly able to move to mount, with Pudilova struggling to do more than tie her up. Perez looked to posture up and drop elbows, with Lucie Pudilova responding by trying to buck the Argentinian off of her. No dice, and Perez began pouring down the ground n’ pound, looking for a stoppage. Despite Perez glancing at the ref, as if to ask when that stoppage would come, she had to fight on, as not enough was getting through. Pudilova held on to her opponent, and weathered the storm, but was slow to get up at the end of the round.

The third round saw Pudilova flip the script, getting the fight down herself early on. She could not keep Perez down however. Lucie Pudilova would get a second chance, however, and land it, taking advantage of a tiring Ailin Perez. Pudilova managed to do considerable damage on top, dropping as

Official Result: Ailin Perez def. Lucie Pudilova by unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Two fighters with identical UFC records squared off in the second fight of UFC Vegas 82 when Nikolas Motta and Trey Odgen stepped into the cage.

Both fighters had lost their UFC debut, won their next fight, and then lost their most recent fight to go to 1-2 in the promotion. The winner of this fight would be on a good path at 2-2, but the loser in danger of losing their job at 1-3 in a talent-rich lightweight division. The one big difference between them was the finishing factor: Motta had finished or been finished in all of his UFC fights while Ogden had gone to decision in all of his. Whose style would win out when these two young lightweights stepped into the cage?

The fight started with a feeling out process for the first ninety seconds of the first round before Ogden lunged in for a failed takedown. Trey did get clinch control though for a good thirty seconds, where he did a good amount of damage with knees and short strikes. Motta tried to put heavy hands on Ogden but Trey either shot a takedown or used lateral movement to avoid every explosion of offense. Offensively, Ogden was essentially only a jab, but his long jab speared Motta frequently and did most of the damage of the round. In the final minute Ogden landed a powerful double leg into half-guard, where he closed out the round on top.

Motta had more success striking to start the second round, landing with his lead hand and moving forward with strikes more often. Ogden was still successful with his evasions, but Motta stuffed the first few takedowns of the round and landed more often. The jab of Ogden was still a big factor and it was hard for Motta to track him down, but by throwing out more volume, more could land for the Brazilian.

Halfway through a close round, Motta landed a hook when he trapped Ogden against the fence that caused Trey to stumble awkwardly. He seemed to recover quickly, but that big moment would loom large on the scorecards in a close round, despite the fact that Ogden made Motta’s mouth leak blood from constant jabs in this round. With forty-five seconds left Ogden landed a monster three punch combo that won him back some points. He parlayed that into his only takedown of the round and then a knee to the head when Motta stood back up right away.

A close second round meant that Ogden could have been up 20-18 going into the third round. Or it could be one round apiece, making it all to play for as the referee restarted the action for the final five minutes. Ogden got in on a single leg and dragged Motta down to open, but Motta got right back up. Trey Ogden would not be denied though and he used the clinch, another single leg, and a final switch to a double leg to land a takedown one minute into the third. Ogden straddled Motta’s legs with Nikolas’ back to the fence until Trey pivoted, dragged Motta down, and established a strong full mount. In an era in MMA where not many fighters can hold onto mount for long, it was highly impressive that Ogden did for most of the round. He stayed heavy on top and looked for the arm triangle, finally stepping off of mount to the side to finish the choke. Motta stayed calm and defended, but Ogden did not let go.

After a while of the choke being in, referee Mike Beltran began to get a bit antsy and tried to get Motta to show him he was conscious. Motta was fighting the choke and could not let go of that to give a thumbs up, so Beltran stopped the fight. Motta immediately stood up and protested but there was seemingly nothing that could be done after the finish was declared.

However everyone was surprised when the decision was announced as a no contest. Trey Ogden seemingly was on his way to a comfortable decision or finish victory, but forces outside of his control kept him from his second UFC victory. Ogden, and Paul Felder interviewing him, seemed perturbed by this turn of events.

In his post-fight interview, Trey Ogden stated his displeasure and that he has bills that need to be paid, so losing his win money due to this is a big deal. He said, “I need to get paid.” Fans will have to stay tuned to find out if the UFC brass agree to those demands, but they seem fair.

Official Result: Trey Ogden and Nikolas Motta ends in No-Contest (referee error), Round 3, 3:11
