Headlining the show was a heavyweight title fight featuring prospects Eduardo Neves and Hugo Cunha, both of whom had their eye on the big leagues. Cunha had a brief, disappointing run with ONE Championship, going 0-1 in the company before returning to LFA and getting back in the win column earlier this year.

Neves was 0-2 on Dana White’s Contender Series, meanwhile, including an appearance on the 2023 edition of the show. He had captured LFA gold earlier this year, however, and remained the reigning champ.

In the co-main event, Brazilians Gabriel Costa and Jefferson Nascimento threw down for an interim lightweight title.

Headlining LFA’s return to Texas was a featherweight main event that saw Landry Ward take on Alfred Walker. A small slip-up at the scales on Thursday, however, saw Walker miss weight by 0.4lbs; he would be paying a penalty to Ward as a result.

Former Bellator MMA and Invicta FC athlete Katharina Lehner was also in action on Friday, looking to make it two wins in a row. The German was set for a bantamweight collision with Melissa Croden, a Canadian coming off a title fight loss against ex-LFA champ and current UFC fighter Jacqueline Cavalcanti.

Two fighters missed weight for LFA 166 on Friday, Samuel Silva and Paulo Oliveira. Both forgeit a portion of their fight purse as a result, but their bouts move forward at a catchweight.

It was not smooth sailing ahead of the event. A full four fighters missed weight at Thursday’s official weigh-in, with three of them on the main card, including co-headliner Buddy Wallace. All four fights moved forward, however, with Wallace, Christian Giovannie, Leandro Soares, and Lucas Martino coughing up a percentage of their purse to their opponents.

In the main event, middleweights Daniel Compton and Renato Valente faced off in middleweight action, with Bellator vet Compton coming in off a win of former UFC fighter Maki Pitolo. Valente for his part was looking to halt Compton’s five-fight win streak, and bounce back from a loss to Azamat Bekoev.

Former UFC flyweight Sabina Mazo was making her long anticipated return to the LFA cage in Friday night’s main event, taking on Dana White’s Contender Series alum Sandra Lavado.

The fight was a battle of South American standouts, with Mazo know as “The Colombian Queen,” while Lavado represented Peru — hence being known as the “Peruvian Zombie.” The winner, meanwhile, would have a shot at heading to (or returning to, in the cage of Mazo) the UFC.

Mazo had been expected to return to action late last year, only for a broken leg to delay her comeback.

First up, the fights that won’t be happening. Adriano Rodrigues missed weight by a whopping 7.8 pounds for a 195lb catchweight bout with Renato Valente. Not to be outdone, Alex Arteaga missed weight by a mind-boggling 8.2 pounds for his featherweight fight with Isaac Thomson, resulting in that bout being scratched as well.

That will no doubt be a weigh-in all involved would like to quickly forget.

In the LFA 161 main event, meanwhile, prospects Cody Davis and Igor Siqueira threw down for the promotion’s vacant 125lb title.
